Giants game-by-game predictions after 2024 NFL schedule release

The New York Giants are hoping to erase the memories of what was a miserable 2023 campaign as they get set to kick things off in 2024.

Two years ago, the Giants appeared to be an up and coming team in the NFC. They won nine games, surprised everyone by making the playoffs and shocked fans and pundits even further when they upset the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card Round.

As a result, New York looked like an interesting team heading into last season, but injuries and underwhelming performance across the board hampered the Daniel Jones and the Giants, resulting in a 6-11 season. It was just the latest disappointing year in what has largely been a decade full of incompetence for Big Blue.

But there may be reason for optimism heading into 2024.

The Giants made some big moves this offseason, swinging a trade for top-flight edge rusher Brian Burns, patching up their hideous offensive line and finally drafting a (hopefully) No. 1 wide receiver in Malik Nabers.

While many still feel that New York will be toward the bottom of the barrel in the NFL next season, there are some who think that the Giants will show improvement and may even contend for a playoff berth.

With the NFL schedules recently being released, we know what New York will be up against in 2024.

Let’s predict how the Giants will fare.

Week 1 vs. Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings are entering a transition year, as J.J. McCarthy has taken over for Kirk Cousins under center. That doesn’t mean they aren’t dangerous, though. Minnesota still has wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, not to mention tight end T.J. Hockenson. There are some big-time weapons here. However, the Giants and their improved defense should be able to give McCarthy some problems. We’ll see if Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux can get to to McCarthy early and often. WIN.

Week 2 at Washington Commanders

I was very tempted to put down the Giants for a sweep in their two meetings with the Commanders. After all, they swept Washington in 2023 and also swept the club in 2019 and 2020. So, there is certainly precedent. But the Commanders should be better in 2024 with Jayden Daniels at quarterback, and even if the Giants have Washington’s number, it’s always tough to sweep a division rival. LOSS.

Week 3 at Cleveland Browns

Oh boy. Daniel Jones and a very questionable offense going up against what was the NFL’s No. 1-ranked defense in 2023? Sounds like trouble for the Giants. New York may have Nabers in tow now, and its offensive line may be better equipped to deal with Myles Garrett than it would have been this past year. But this is the type of game where Big Blue could have really used Saquon Barkley, who is no longer with the club.  LOSS.

Week 4 vs. Dallas Cowboys

The Giants have beaten the Cowboys just once since 2017. That one time came back in January 2021, and Andy Dalton was playing quarterback in place of the injured Dak Prescott. So, technically, New York has not topped a Prescott-led Dallas squad since 2016. It’s time for the Giants to break the curse at home. WIN.

Week 5 at Seattle Seahawks

This contest against the Seahawks is actually one of the more winnable road games on the Giants’ schedule. Seattle is decent, but it isn’t anything special. Geno Smith showed signs of a decline last year, and the Seahawks weren’t anything special on either side of the ball. As a matter of fact, they ranked 30th defensively, and they didn’t really make any notable additions to their defensive unit in free agency. Going coast to coast is always tough, but I get the feeling New York will play well here. WIN.

Week 6 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

The fact that the Giants get stuck playing the AFC North next season is a real buzzkill for their playoff hopes. The Bengals are considered by some to be the biggest threats to take down the Kansas City Chiefs so long as Joe Burrow stays healthy. Cincinnati is very explosive offensively, and while Big Blue actually may be able to put up some points against Cincy’s rather squishy defense, the Bengals are probably too good overall for the Giants to take down, even at home. LOSS.

Week 7 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Ah, the Saquon Barkley game. Barkley will be making his Big Apple return in this affair after signing with the hated Eagles via free agency. He is sure to hear the jeers and boos from the crowd at MetLife Stadium, and it may actually motivate him even further. However, Barkley does not quite look like the same all-around threat he was years ago, and while Philadelphia’s roster looks stacked, let’s remember how poorly Philly closed out the season, which included a blowout loss to the Giants at the Meadowlands. WIN.

Week 8 at Pittsburgh Steelers

Again, the fact that the Giants had to get stuck playing the AFC North is just brutal. I don’t even have them winning a single game against this division in 2024. The Steelers may end up being New York’s best shot, particularly if things go south with Russell Wilson. Still, this matchup is in Pittsburgh, and the Giants just aren’t battle-tested enough to mark them down for a win here. LOSS.

Week 9 vs. Washington Commanders

The Giants have won three straight meetings with the Commanders and have gone 8-2-1 against Washington in their last 11 meetings overall. They definitely have the Commanders’ number regardless of where they play. Again, Washington will definitely be more interesting in 2024 with Daniels under center, but this is essentially a must-win home game for New York if it wants to be taken seriously as a playoff contender in the NFC. WIN.

Week 10 at Carolina Panthers

The Panthers went 2-15 in 2023. Yes, they made some roster improvements this offseason, but there is absolutely no reason for the Giants to lose this game unless they play down to their opponent or if they just aren’t very good. If New York loses to Carolina, it doesn’t deserve to make the playoffs. Not much more to add here. WIN.

Week 11 – BYE

Week 12 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Buccaneers were such a likeable team last season. It was great to see Baker Mayfield having fun again, and Tampa Bay quietly had (and still has) one of the NFL’s best receiving duos in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Still, the Bucs ranked in the bottom third in the NFL in both offense and defense in 2023, and their success was largely based on the weakness of the NFC South. They brought all of their key guys back, but didn’t make any major additions. Similar to the Saints matchup, the Giants need to beat these kinds of teams at MetLife Stadium. WIN.

Week 13 at Dallas Cowboys

The Giants may end up getting the better of the Cowboys at home, but the idea of New York actually sweeping Dallas seems outlandish these days. The Giants should just be happy to be able to win one game against their fierce NFC East rivals. LOSS.

Week 14 vs. New Orleans Saints

The Saints were actually one of the more disappointing teams in the NFL last season. They entered the year as NFC South favorites, but ended up losing out on the division to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Things have not changed all that much for New Orleans going into 2024. Its roster is largely the same. Derek Carr is still under center. The defense is good, not great. Basically, the Saints are an average team, and if the Giants want to make the playoffs, they are going to have to win these types of games at home. WIN.

Week 15 vs. Baltimore Ravens

Two years ago, the Giants actually upset the Baltimore Ravens at home. Does New York have another shocker in the cards for 2024? Probably not. Lamar Jackson and the Ravens are a better team now than they were in 2022, and it just seems hard to imagine Big Blue winning two straight against Baltimore, even if both contests are at the Meadowlands. Jackson really struggled against the Giants in that previous meeting. Odds are he’ll play much better this time around. This is definitely one of the toughest games on New York’s schedule. LOSS.

Week 16 at Atlanta Falcons

The new-look Falcons will be one of the more intriguing ballclubs to monitor in 2024. Kirk Cousins is now at quarterback for Atlanta, and while he doesn’t have a ton of weapons at his disposal, he has enough to at least beat the Giants. Wide receiver Drake London, tight end Kyle Pitts and running back Bijan Robinson are all tough covers. Plus, the game is indoors in the Falcons’ building, so Cousins should feel right at home after playing all those years in Minnesota’s dome. New York may struggle here. LOSS.

Week 17 vs. Indianapolis Colts

This is one of the bigger swing games on the Giants’ schedule. The Colts went 9-8 last season, and that was with Anthony Richardson only playing four games. How many wins will Richardson add to Indianapolis’ resume this year, if any at all? If this game were in Indy, it would probably be a loss for New York, but it’s a home matchup for the G-Men. So long as Richardson doesn’t run all over the Giants’ defense, New York should be able to come out on top here. It may have to in order to have a serious shot at the postseason. WIN.

Week 18 at Philadelphia Eagles

Similar to the Cowboys, the Giants should be happy with a split in this rivalry next season. New York will take the meeting at MetLife Stadium, but will end up losing to the Eagles in Philly. LOSS.

Final Record: 9-8
