Fabio Liverani and director Walter Sabatini were apologetic to Salernitana supporters following a 4-2 defeat to Cagliari, with reports of another coaching change.

They were already rock bottom of the table and the situation only became even more desperate after this result in Sardinia.

There had been a brief respite with the comeback from 3-0 down to 3-2, before Eldor Shomurodov completed his brace for the final result.

“After a game like this, I can only accept that I did not have the impact I expected or imagined when I came back in January,” director general Sabatini explained via the club’s social media channels.

“I apologise to the club and the President, who always backed me, but above all I apologise to all the fans, asking them not to drop this team and to wait until the end of the season. Then we will take the right action.”

Salernitana started the campaign under Paulo Sousa, then brought in Pippo Inzaghi and fired him for Fabio Liverani, all to no avail.

There are already reports today that the club is ready to sack Liverani and appoint Stefano Colantuono to see out the rest of the season.

Liverani was asked by DAZN if he was thinking of tending his resignation.

“I would think about resigning if the team was not playing or was not following my instructions, but I don’t think that is a pertinent question for me.

“The club will make its evaluations, but I don’t think that right now I am the problem at Salernitana.”

Since taking the job on February 11, Liverani has overseen a draw and three defeats on the Salernitana bench, where his team scored three goals and conceded 11.
