With Stefano Pioli departing, AC Milan have finally removed their safety blanket, opening themselves to a new era. However, with that process comes risks, and the Rossoneri must ensure they are confident in the 58-year-old’s successor.

Several names have swirled around the soon-to-be vacant post at Milan, yet we are no closer to knowing who will be bestowed with leading the Diavolo after Pioli’s departure.

Julen Lopetegui seemed to be destined to be given the role. However, following a large backlash on social media, the club made a U-turn about the decision and are still evaluating their options.

The decision serves as a stark reminder to the club of the expectations that the Rossonero have for the next manager, and whilst Pioli has disappointed recently, he has done a lot for the club, and there are big shoes to fill, which the management will be aware of.

As Gianluigi Longari (via Radio Rossonera) reports, this may be why Milan are expanding their options and looking further afield than they have before. Whilst names like Antonio Conte and Roberto De Zerbi remain, there is also another candidate who heavily intrigues the club: Sergio Conceicao.

The report suggests that the Porto manager’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is attempting to ‘push the move’, and given he is on the Diavolo’s list of candidates, it could be the push they have needed to make action.
